KALĀ, defined as "art" in Sanskrit, serves as a platform for showcasing South Asian modern and contemporary art, originating from both the local and diasporic arts community. KALĀ, in association with the Lionel Wendt Art Centre, aimed to provide a new annual platform that contributed to the sustainable development of art ecosystems within the Sri Lankan region and wider South Asia. KALĀ took place in Colombo, Sri Lanka, from 28 January to 25 February 2024.
For its inaugural edition, Art South Asia Project partnered with KALĀ for the programming series, KALĀ x ASAP. KALĀ x ASAP ran from 28 January to 12 February 2024. The talks and workshops, both in person and digitally, were dedicated to the art ecosystem of Sri Lanka and to connecting Sri Lankan art further with the South Asia region. The rich arts and cultural landscape of Sri Lankan art was celebrated through discussions by modern and contemporary specialists, curators, artists from the country and wider region, along with representatives of various institutions that strive to create a unified and inclusive art community. These talks and workshops were served to explore the connections between the Sri Lankan art community and South Asian institutions; creating further dialogues within the region.
KALĀ envisions fostering the growth of this event year after year, seamlessly integrating art projects and exhibitions across Sri Lanka with a diverse calendar of engaging talks, online panel discussions, and immersive workshops. KALĀ adopts a flexible and dynamic approach, encompassing a wide spectrum of artistic projects, ranging from public programmes to artist driven endeavors such as artist residencies, talks, workshops, and collaborative collectives.
The main exhibition took place in the Lionel Wendt Centre, an exhibition space that was relaunched with the inaugural edition of KALĀ. The exhibition, Pivot. Glide. Echo. was curated by Mariyam Begum, under the guidance of Sandhini Poddar, KALĀ Curatorial Advisor,  Adjunct Curator at the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Project and ASAP’s Founding Advisory Board Member.
This programming was made possible by the support of Faizal & Shabana Foundation and Lionel Wendt Art Trust.

KALĀ x ASAP Talk Series
ASAP curated a series of talks held in person at the Lionel Wendt Art Centre in Colombo from 28–31 January, tailored to local audiences in Sri Lanka. ASAP aimed to amplify conversations around Sri Lankan artists by contextualising them within broader discussions of South Asian art history. It was also essential to explore how the commercial and development markets operate, alongside providing an art historical framework for deeper understanding. The online discussions were then designed to reach a wider audience eager to engage further with Sri Lankan and South Asian art.
