EGARO PHOTO FESTIVAL
Out in the Sun
Egaro Photo Festival under the aegis of the Boinari Foundation launched "Out in the Sun" - an archival program aiming to build a visual narrative of Tripura. "Out in the Sun" aspires to capture the complexities of the region's frontier zone dynamics, including its ever-changing demographics. Historical events will be interwoven with snippets of everyday lives, showcasing both the indigenous communities and those who have migrated to Tripura over time.
In this project, the foundation aimed to build a robust archive by collecting photographs, artefacts, memorabilia and personal and communal stories. By bypassing the traditional museum model, they intended to democratize access by establishing an online archive accessible to a global audience. Combining online and offline access points, "Out in the Sun" aims to dismantle barriers and create a truly inclusive archive.
Supported by the Art South Asia Project Archival Grant 2024–25, “Out in the Sun” is a landmark initiative that brings together memory, visual culture, and grassroots storytelling from Tripura. By engaging local communities and artists, the project has built a dynamic archive of personal histories and regional narratives. Collaborations with groups like Cross Cat Collective and training from the Northeast India AV Archive have strengthened both creative interpretation and archival practice. Additionally, curated public exhibitions will be announced soon to bring the archive to the local communities within Tripura, and an online version of the archive—accessible for free—will ensure that these stories remain open, inclusive, and available to audiences across the world.
Boinari Foundation
Since 2014, the Boinari Foundation has served as a driving force in fostering vibrant cultural engagement through exhibition-making, workshops and archival projects.
One of the foundation's most celebrated programs is the Egaro Photo Festival. Held biennially, it extends its reach beyond Tripura's borders by collaborating with artists, collectives, curators and international organizations.
In February 2024, they made a significant mark at the 15th edition of the India Art Fair by showcasing works from various Northeast Indian artists. Recently, partnering with the British Council, The Queer Muslim Project, and the We4We project they showcased films from around the world to the audiences in Agartala.
